Female Fight Club

In class the idea of “what if Fight Club was with girls instead of guys” was presented. This is a very interesting way to think about any movie especially one that is as male oriented as Fight Club. Based on the comments in class there are two ways I thought to examine this. The first being if the whole movie stayed the same and only the genders of the characters was swapped would society take it the same way? The short answer would be no. This is because people don’t associate women with this kind of violence as a mere stress relief. Majority of people would see this and think that those women must be crazy. Even if the main character in Fight Club is off the deep end, people see him as a metaphor to finding oneself, not the same way a woman would be thought of. I do have to say that people that could look past the gender role reversal would receive the movie just as well as the original because the message is so deep. The second way to think of this scenario is how it could be changed so that people don’t have that problem to begin with. I like the point in class that these women would have to be fighting for some reason; they couldn’t be fighting just to fight. A woman fighting for her child, loved one, or to survive makes it okay for the woman to partake in such violence. The problem with this is that it would change the story line quite a bit and possibly not get the same message across. By making the “Female Fight Club” more society friendly by adding a reason to fight it sacrifices the message of self destruction to find oneself.

Here are some clips I found with some girls who already did this.

  1. These videos were great and I am glad that you found the reversal approach useful, Zach.
